Seasonal Detox: Cleanse the Ayurveda Way

“When diet is wrong, medicine is of no use; When diet is correct, medicine is of no need.”
- Ancient Ayurvedic Proverb

Seasonal cleansing with whole foods and nourishing herbs has been used in the practice of Ayurveda for thousands of years. Traditionally, Ayurvedic cleanses are performed with the change in seasons.

Seasonal cleanses help to maintain our bodies for the long run.  Releasing accumulated toxins allows us to fortify our insides and prepare for what we all know as “Flu & Cold Season”.

Why Cleanse at the Spring Equinox?

Kapha builds up in winter, liquefies in spring and needs to be cleansed.  The damp, cold and heavy qualities manifest as accumulated toxins, clogging the energetic channels and lowering our immunity.

You may notice more congestion, allergies, aching joints, weight gain, or a decline in energy which are all signs of heavy Ama (toxins).  If the qualities of Kapha remain strong and are unchecked into the Spring, it could lead to more imbalance and cause problems in the body, mind, and spirit.  Read more on why performing Spring Cleansing is essential.

Giving the digestive system a RESET + REJUVENATION allows us to release cravings, shed excess weight and deeply support our nervous system.

Why Cleanse at the Autumn Equinox?

Summer brings us fiery Pitta months and the accumulation of heat in our bodies. As we transition into Autumn, Vata, the dosha governed by air begins to take over.  The shift of seasons creates just the right physical host environment for flu and cold viruses that blow in on Autumn's winds.

Any accumulation of Pitta from the summer months need to be cleansed, otherwise there is an overload of Ama (toxins) in the body. Ama can create a physical and psychological sludge that is the basis of almost all disease.

An Ayurvedic cleanse, or detoxification, can be performed at the beginning of the season, or whenever you are feeling sluggish.  Any time you feel excess Ama is a good time to cleanse.

Symptoms of excessive Ama (toxic byproducts of undigested food, emotions, and experiences) include:

  • Fatigue or lack of energy
  • Impatience or Irritability
  • Stiff or achy feelings in the body
  • Inability to lose excess weight or undesired weight gain
  • Sugar or processed carb cravings
  • Candida
  • Skin issues like rashes, dry skin or acne
  • White coating on tongue (check upon waking in the morning)

The Ayurvedic protocol includes plant based cleansing with delicious recipes and specific practices to move toxins out of your body.  Nourish rather than deprive for a more balanced, lighter and clearer you!

The essence of Ayurveda teaches us that we are all part of nature and that everything within nature (including our bodies and minds), consists of five elements: air, fire, water, earth, and space.

This is mirrored in our bodies: the bones are dense, the waterways transport blood, fire in the belly transforms food into energy, and the nervous system that stimulates movement and connects the body to mind.

The Doshas are a combination of some of the elements, and are always active and playing within and around us. Just as the weather changes throughout the day and the seasons…so do our bodies, our minds, AND our needs!

This quiz is the first step toward understanding your Dosha. Understanding the breakdown of your specific Mind-Body constitution will help you create a roadmap to healthier habits as you take control of your own well-being.

“There exists in every person a place that is free from disease, that never feels pain, that cannot age or die. When you go to this place, limitations which all of us accept cease to exist. They are not even entertained as a possibility. This is the place called perfect health.”

Dr. Deepak Chopra
